AH Talks: The Mayor of Islington, Rukhia Ismail

The Mayor Sadiq Khan has assured that racism on University campuses across London will be at the top of his agenda when meeting higher education principles.

The Mayor agreed that institutional racism still exists at Question Time, in City Hall. Labour member Jennette Arnold, raised concerns of racial inequalities amid Black History Month. She said through speaking to elders of the Windrush generation, their grandchildren continue to experience higher unemployment and lower pay than white graduates. Sadiq Khan agreed and put forward plans to combat the problem through working with high educational institutions.

17/10/2019 - The Mayors Question Time

Rukhia Ismail the first Somali born Muslim Mayor of Islington shares her thoughts:

"Teachers either in Universities, lecturers or in schools you need to have not only just diverse lecturers, but you need to also help them. There should be policies that train them, that way they would learn because I just don’t think there’s a lecturer on Earth that would want to be just purely racist. What is he doing or she doing in the University establishment in the first place if they are not there to make a better change?"
